Natural Family Planning
Southern/Central/Tidewater Virginia
Natural Family Planning is a method of fertility awareness that enables couples to achieve or postpone a pregnancy. Couples learn to identify the fertile and infertile phases of the cycle by observing a woman's cervical mucus and fluctuations in her basal body temperature. Couples then abstain from intercourse during the fertile phase of the cycle if a pregnancy is to be avoided. The number of days of abstinence can vary, but is usually about ten days per cycle.

Natural Family Planning classes are offered throughout Virginia, taught by certified instructors. There are two class options. Central to either class is learning basic reproductive physiology, how to observe and chart the signs of fertility, how to determine the fertile and infertile times of a woman's cycle, and reviewing the Catholic Church's teaching on marital sexuality.

Instructors certified through the Couple to Couple League offer classes which meet once a month for four months, meeting each month for a two hour class. Instructors are then available for follow-up to answer individual questions and to review charts.

In Charlottesville, NFP classes are taught under a program of the Diocese of Harrisburg. Couples meet for an initial two hour class of instruction. They then schedule two follow-up sessions, meeting individually with the instructor over the next six months to answer questions and review charting.
