AARP CHAPTER DAY OF SERVICE EVENT WITH PHOTOS

AARP CHAPTER "MAY 2008 PROGRAM"

DATE: Tuesday, May 20, 2008
WHERE: Blacksburg Senior Center Meeting Room, 725 Patrick Henry Drive
WHEN: 11:30 AM (Bring Bag Lunch); Program Starts at Noon
TOPIC: Virginia General Assembly Legislative Report

Program: Senator John Edwards and Delegate Jim Shuler will report on the results of the 2008 session of the Virginia General Assembly.   Both Edwards and Shuler represent Blacksburg.  Senator Ralph Smith and Delegate Dave Nutter who represent parts of Montgomery County were invited but were unable to attend.  Questions will be taken from the audience.
Roanoke Times reporter, Beth Macy, has written a series of outstanding articles on home health care in Virginia.   Please visit the website, Age of Uncertainty and under the "stories" tab at the webpage top, view the list of stories.  Download the article, Virginia Ranks Low in Funding of Home Care   as a good reference to read prior to attending the May 20th legislative meeting.
The Table Top Talk and Display: Vern Simpson, representing the Blacksburg Food Pantry will have handouts and a display about the local effort to feed the hungry in Blacksburg.  He has asked all who attend the meeting to bring at least one can of beans and/or soup.   A larger contribution of several cans of soup or beans would be welcomed.

AARP Chapter meetings are open to the public - All are welcome!



AARP DRIVER SAFETY COURSES

Everyone age 50 and over really needs to take the AARP Driver Safety Course to refine current driver skills and develop defensive driving techniques.  The 8-hour classroom refresher course does not include any examinations, but enrollees must attend sessions on both days to receive completion certificates.  Graduates may be eligible to receive state-mandated multi-year discounts to their auto insurance premiums.  Enrollment is $10, payable by cash or check to "AARP" at the start of the class.
Course I: Blacksburg United Methodist Church, 111 Church Street SE, Blacksburg, Virginia
Thursday and Friday, May 22 and May 23, 2008; From 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Call Marcella Hopkins (951-4478) or the church office (552-5424, ext 1 then 3) to pre-register for the course.

Course II: Town of Blacksburg Senior Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg, Virginia
Thursday and Friday, September 25 and September 26, 2008; From 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.
