GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT AAUW
AAUW
The American Association of University Women is composed of
three corporations:
The Association
The Association—with more than 100,000 members, 1,300 branches, and 550 college/university institution partners nationwide—advocates education and equity. Since its founding in 1881, members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day—educational, social, economic, and political.
The Association's voice has long influenced legislative debate on critical social issues such as education, sex discrimination, civil rights, reproductive choice, affirmative action, Title IX, welfare reform, vocational education, pay equity, family and medical leave, and health care reform.
The AAUW Educational Foundation
The AAUW Educational Foundation, which is the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women in the world, supports aspiring scholars around the globe, teachers and activists in local communities, women at critical stages of their careers, and those pursuing professions where women are underrepresented. The Foundation funds:
groundbreaking research
fellowships and grants for outstanding women from around the globe
special awards
vital community action projects
symposia, roundtables, and forums
The Foundation's cornerstone has always been the remarkable energy and commitment of AAUW members, other individuals, corporations, and foundations that make contributions and help raise money for the Foundation's work.

The Legal Advocacy Fund
The nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and support for women seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination.
Since 1981 the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund has helped students, faculty, and administrators in higher education challenge discriminatory practices involving sexual harassment, denial of tenure or promotion, and inequality in women's athletics programs.
The fund promotes equity for women in higher education by:
1. providing financial support for sex discrimination lawsuits;
2. recognizing innovative efforts to improve the climate for women on campus through the LAF Progress
in Equity Awards;
3. organizing a network of volunteer attorneys and social scientists who consult with women on legal strategy,
informational resources, and the strength of current or potential lawsuits.
AAUW members and other individuals contribute money, time, and expertise to strengthen AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund's efforts to end sex discrimination in higher education.
