RELIGIOUS SCHOOL OPEN HOUSE
Wednesday, August 25, 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the BJCC
This Open House is for returning, new, and prospective Religious School families. Please bring your school-age children (pre-K to 7th grade), so the students can meet their classmates and teachers for the coming year. Information about the school year will be handed out and parents will be asked to fill out forms for the Religious School.
This will be a POTLUCK DESSERT event so please bring something sweet to share.
Our ISJL (Institute for Southern Jewish Life) fellow, Molly Glazer will be with us for this meet and greet. Molly will be leading our Fall and Spring weekend programming this year and providing support for the Religious School Curriculum.
We are looking forward to another excellent year!

The BJCC provides religious education in both Judaic Studies and Hebrew Language for children pre-K through 7th grade. Classes take place on Sunday mornings throughout the school year. The school also provides instruction for the pre-Bat and Bar Mitzvah year focusing on the Shabbat morning service. Most families additionally choose to hire an individual tutor to provide personalized Bat-Bar Mitzvah instruction.
Time and general schedule:
The 2010-2011 school year will operate on Sunday mornings from 9:30-12:00 for K-7th graders. Pre-K students will attend from 9:30-11:00 (no Hebrew instruction). Each Sunday morning students will participate in Judaic studies (9:30-10:40), singing and snacks (10:40-11:00), and Hebrew instruction (11:00-12:00).
Curriculum:
This is our second year using a comprehensive curriculum designed by the Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL). It is a spiraled curriculum, in which students revisit key content areas with increased sophistication as they progress year by year through the program.
The ten key content areas are: Community, Culture and Symbols, God, Hebrew and Prayer, Israel, Jewish History, Jewish Holidays, Jewish Lifecycle Events, Mitzvot and Jewish Values, and Tanach (Torah, Prophets, and Writings). Each lesson provides activities to engage children via auditory, kinesthetic, and visual learning styles.
Family Programming:
We offer Family Programming days throughout the year. At these times, students participate together in activities to learn about holidays and other concepts important to Judaism. This is a wonderful way for everyone to feel a full sense of the Jewish community in Blacksburg. This portion of Sunday School is also open for a nominal fee to families with children who are not enrolled in the Sunday School program.
Our Staff:
Our teachers are members of the Virginia Tech Hillel, most of whom are returning from last year. We are very excited to have our Education Fellow, Molly Glaser, from the ISJL program working alongside us this year to provide further programming and guidance to our Sunday School program. She will visit us three different times throughout the year to provide further educational experiences for the community.
Fee schedule per child for the 2010-2011 Religious School:
- $325 for grades K-7
- $175 for pre-K.
Please call either of the Religious School Co-Chairs with inquiries or to register your child or children for Sunday School for the 2010-2011 school year. The current co-chairs are Leslie Kornblith and Lauren Colliver. Their contact information can be found in the BJCC monthly newsletter, The Shofar.
Payments may be made in installments. Financial aid and reduced fees are determined on a case-by-case basis by our Treasurer, Irene Jacobs. If your financial situation prevents full payment of dues or fees, or to arrange installment payments, please discuss your situation in confidence with Irene (540-552-7699).
Checks should be made out to "BJCC" and sent to:
BJCC Treasurer
P.O. Box 782
Blacksburg, VA 24063
and please write "Sunday School" on your check's memo line.

Adult Education
We try to organize several adult-education sessions each year. Some years we enjoy visits from one of the rabbis at (Reform) Temple Emanuel or (Conservative) Beth Israel Synagogue in Roanoke, 40 miles away. Details of any such events appear in our monthly newsletter, the Shofar.
From time to time, when there is enough demand, a member has volunteered to teach prayerbook literacy starting with reading Hebrew, or how to chant Torah or Haftarah. Do you have some special Jewish knowledge that you'd like to share? If so, please get in touch with the BJCC President to get it scheduled and publicized, and help us learn.
