About the Coalition for Justice

The Coalition for Justice is a non-partisan coalition of religious, political, and community organizations and individuals drawn together in common concern about the ongoing oppression of the peoples of Central America and the world. Originally organized in the spring of 1981, the focus of the Coalition has been to facilitate public awareness of the social, economic, and political dimensions of the Central American crisis through educational and political efforts. Members have chosen to expand the Coalition's scope to include peace and justice issues that affect those struggling locally and in other regions of the world, with Central America continuing to be the centerpiece of its work.

The Coalition has sponsored numerous speakers and films, conducted letter writing and petition drives, raised humanitarian aid for the people of Central America, and participated in local, regional, and national rallies and demonstrations. It publishes ¡Presente!, a page of news and information on issues of social justice in Central America and elsewhere, in each month's issue of the New River Free Press.

Interested individuals are invited to attend the Coalition's Beans and Rice Dinners and educational programs, which are ordinarily held at 6:30 p.m. on the third Monday of each month at Blacksburg Presbyterian Church, corner of Church and Hemlock Streets (December and June-August excepted). The home page of this web site and the New River Free Press list the dates and topics of Coalition events.
