Between the years of 1717 and 1776, approximately 250,000 Scots-Irish people emigrated from Ulster, Ireland to America.  A great number of these settled in the Valley of Virginia.  Among these were the forebears of the Prestons of Smithfield.

Smithfield descended in the Preston family for five generations.  It was deeded to the APVA in 1959 by Janie Preston Boulware Lamb.

For more information about John and Mary Preston Lewis' descendants, the photograph of "Grandmother Gray's Wedding Party, September 4, 1895, Seven Mile Ford, Virginia" may be of interest.  We are grateful to Anne J. Hager for sharing the photograph with us.

Several Preston geneological websites are available that  include information about the Smithfield Preston's beginning with Colonel William Preston's father John Preston.   One site contains information mostly from "The Preston Genealogy" by L. A. Wilson and William Bowker Preston, Deseret News, 1900.  A more complete site is available with many notations from letters, newspapers, and other family sources. The Preston/Floyd family bible also contains geneological information.
