The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly referred to as Virginia Tech, is located in the area between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Mountains of southwest Virginia. It opened its doors on October 1, 1872 as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College at Blacksburg, thus beginning its tradition as a land grant university for the Commonwealth of Virginia. From quite humble beginnings on the Indian frontier, the University today is home to almost 25,000 graduate and undergraduate students, ranking as the largest state university in Virginia with national and international recognition for high academic standards, outstanding research and its varied international programs across the globe. The Virginia Tech Faculty Women's Club (VTFWC) is an organization of women connected with Virginia Tech, voluntarily associating to expand the intellectual and social horizons of its membership. Its primary outreach activity is supporting the scholarly development of women students at Virginia Tech.

Toward this end, the Club created scholarship funds through the sale of the cookbook, "Food for Thought," and two previous cookbooks, all featuring a compilation of favorite recipes from our VTFWC members. The VTFWC Ways and Means committee is continuing to campaign to raise money for the Scholarship Fund. Each year scholarships are awarded to two outstanding Junior women students at Virginia Tech for use during their senior year. The award is based on excellence in civic and extracurricular activities as well as outstanding scholarship.
