Friday Forum events will be held at The Grove, home of President and Mrs. Charles Steger on the Virginia Tech campus. All events begin with coffee and tea at 10:00 a.m. and end following the presentation at approximately 11:30 a.m. on the first Friday of each month. The exception this year will be the November Forum, which will be held on Thursday, November 3rd. Events are subject to change. Watch your newsletter for announcements.

Maestro Wiley will perform on the piano, share exciting news about the RSO, sign CDs and take questions from the audience. Wiley will discuss the new and innovative ways the RSO is reaching new and expanding audiences, creating new kinds of collaborative musical programs and reaching thousands of students each year. What is the future of professional orchestras? Why is the RSO a successful artistic business model? Come share an intimate musical morning with the Maestro.

Topic: : From the Classics to Jazz with a Little Opera In Between

Our speaker will talk about the state of music in general on the radio, in an era when radio is Old Media, with challenges from the Internet and satellite. He will also talk about presenting music to a non-specialist public, reviewing concerts and opera, the future (if any) of music on radio and how music on public radio differs from commercial, from station to station. All this and titillating private anecdotes as well!

Topic: : The Monstrous Regiment of Women

Between 1861 and 1865 somewhere around 800 or more women attempted, or claimed to have attempted, to enlist and serve in the Union or Confederate armies disguised as men. Why would they do that? What were their experiences, obstacle, and hazards? What did society - not to mention the military - think of them? And why did so many frauds appear with false claims to have served in the armies?
