"Hunting" elusive jaguars with trip cameras and smart dogs Marcella Kelly will describe how to study a species that is rarely ever seen in the wild. Her research includes the use of remotely triggered cameras to "capture" jaguars on film. Each jaguar has a unique coat pattern - like a fingerprint. From the photos, therefore, she can identify individual cats and keep track of their lives. In addition, she is also using former drug/bomb dogs that have been re-trained to find jaguar scat. These scat dogs locate cat scats, from which we can gather information on jaguar genetic health. All of this information is being used to help provide for more effective conservation of this magnificent species.
